This watermelon has stayed etched in Palestinian memories to this day. There is almost no one from Jenin who does not have a story from their parents or grandparents, or their own experience, of this beloved fruit. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAssociated with \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBa'al\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e agriculture (unirrigated, rain-fed farming), these watermelons were long \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eknown for their pest resistance and resilience in dry climates, and beloved for their sweet, rich flavor, and round and heavy size. In the days when borders were open, Jadu’i was exported from Palestine across the region, to Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and no doubt even further afield.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDue to some genetic bottlenecking — this variety very nearly went extinct — fruits on these \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eJadu’i\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e plants are smaller than they should be. We are doing our best to select seeds only from the largest fruits, and we urge you to do the same.
